Question by billy25685: How to support military personnel but oppose the reasons for them being overseas, without seeming un-American?

I believe that military is good for energetic youth and an essential part of any nation's defense. But I see people on two sides of a single issue: support the troops or oppose the war. How to find middle ground which promotes military service but doesn't place service members in unnecessary danger?

I do not see people on both sides of this issue. I see the conservative side, which purports to support the military yet approves of sending them into unwise wars and sends them without the right equipment, and I see the liberal side, which warns against unncessary wars and disapproves of certain missions but supports the troops that are sent to carry out the missions and lobbies for them to have the right equipment. The liberal side also speaks up for military families (Michele Obama's first choice of issues), speaks up for better medical care for vets, speaks up for defining the mission and making sure we have an exit strategy, and supports avoiding quagmires like Vietnam was and Iraq now is.
